As we set our intentions for a new year it is time to review our lives and decide what it is we want to achieve over the coming 12 months, both personally and professionally. Are we happy? Are we getting up each day looking forward to what lies ahead or do we need to make some changes?
If you are unhappy with any situation in your life, sit down quietly somewhere where you can think without distractions and ask yourself honestly where the problem lies? If it is with you, resolve to make any necessary changes. This could be deciding to eat more healthily, to exercise more, or to work on promoting better relationships with those around you. If the issues you are experiencing are caused by someone else, talk to them about it and if they refuse to listen or are not prepared to compromise and make changes alongside your efforts, then perhaps it is time to question whether you want this person or persons in your life?
You are the creator of your own destiny and nobody can make you feel a certain way, unless you allow them to. If you are compromising yourself for the people around you and feeling undervalued, taken for granted, or put upon, then it is time to question who you are choosing to have around you. Life is too wonderful to be trapped in an unhappy relationship or job. If you know that deep down you have tried everything you can to improve the situation and it’s still not working, then make a conscious choice that this is the year you do something tangible about it. If that means leaving, then find your strength to make that happen. If it means staying, then embrace that decision and move on with it.
Once you have made a decision, you can then start to make a plan as to how you are going to achieve your aim. Break it down into manageable chunks and each day take some small action towards the life you want to lead. One day soon enough, you will find yourself living it.
And always remember these very wise words from Dr Seuss:
‘You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself any direction you choose! ‘
If we choose to walk a new and different path, then we must first put our feet on it and take a step. May this year bring you the clarity you need to make the right decisions to live your best life and the confidence to move forward in the direction of your dreams.
Enjoy the journey.
